Fair Trade, organic, shade grown, bird-friendly…the many certifications out there can seem daunting when you’re looking at a supermarket shelf trying to make a decision about what coffee is best.
Green Mountain Coffee offers conventionally grown coffees as well as coffees that are Fair Trade and organic certified. We believe that the combination of Fair Trade and organic certifications is the “gold standard” in setting social and environmental standards for farmers and the environment. These certifications deliver clarity and transparency to consumers on the social and environmental consequences of the products they purchase.
Now more and more of you understand these benefits. According to the National Coffee Association, organic is the one coffee certification that most consumers are aware of. More than half of consumers — 53% — are aware of organic certified coffee.
Among those who are aware of coffee certifications, Fair Trade is the one that most often leads to purchase. More than two thirds — 67% — of consumers that are aware of Fair Trade choose to purchase Fair Trade certified coffees.
So our double-certified Fair Trade organic coffees benefit from both trends – the high awareness factor of organic certified coffee and the high purchasing rate for Fair Trade Certified™ coffee.
What about the 47% who are unaware of organic certification, or the 33% that don’t purchase Fair Trade coffees? We’re working on it. We believe it’s our job to educate more of you about the benefits of these certifications — and the great quality coffees they represent — so you can make better choices when you’re looking at the shelf wondering what to buy. Be Fair!
